I recently returned from speaking at Sitka WhaleFest in Alaska, a unique science festival that celebrates the local knowledge and marine science of the Northern oceans and has been running for 19 years. Having never been to Alaska, I had an inkling that this was going to be a great work trip but boy, were my expectations surpassed! (more…)

As we start this new week, some of us can be a bit slower to take that leap. That’s okay! Take the time you need and know that you’ll get there in the end. Speed doesn’t matter, forward is forward.
P.S. Research cruises are never usually like this.
P.P.S. Yes, that’s me struggling to jump.

The diving in the Solomon Islands was like no other I’ve ever experienced. These were reefs that I had only ever seen on the pages of @natgeo. There were more species than I could count and fan corals that were nearly double my size. An incredible marine experience that I am grateful for and a reminder that there are so many places on this beautiful planet worth saving. Thank you @the_chus_martinez. 📸: @franticbornemisza •••••••••••••••••••

And...we're off! It is Day 1 of the
#JacksonWild19 Summit, all focused on #LivingOceans, and I’m thrilled because @jacksonwildorg opened with a panel on the deep sea. Jennifer Berglund, Peter Girguis, Tim Shank and I shared the wonders of the deep, its vital importance to our planet, and the threats facing it. We also implored all present to tell the plethora of amazing deep-sea stories, from unique species to surreal landscapes, so it is catapulted into mainstream culture. Getting more of humanity to know and understand the deep ocean is a big missing piece of the puzzle of ocean conservation.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a Sicklefin Devilray (Mobula tarapacana) that we spotted from the @oceanx Deep Rover submersible off St. Peter and St. Paul’s Rocks in 2017. Nearly smack bang in the middle of the Atlantic, and one of the most bizarre and beautiful places I’ve ever been, rays congregate around these rocks. Judging by the light, we were probably between 150 and 350 metres depth, but they’ve been known to dive to 1848 metres! ••••••••••••••••••• #WomeninSTEM #ECR #marinebiologist #ocean #deepseabiologist #marinescience #STP17 #submersible #StPaulsRocks #sea #Brazil #TrinidadandTobago #happiness #science #scicomm #deepsea #research #ecology #deepseaexploration #exploration #OceanX #Alucia #biographic #throwbackThursday #sub
